FortWhyte Alive Model Watershed Project

Declining water quality conditions in FortWhyte Alive's 5 lakes were identified through staff observations and the subsequent completion of a North-South Consultants Assessment of Current Water Quality Conditions in August 2009. In 2013, FortWhyte staff began to collect monthly baseline monitoring data on lake health parameters, year-round. The program's purpose is to provide a data source for future post-secondary research objectives, and to assist in water management decisions that can improve the lake's water quality. FortWhyte lakes support an urban fishery and are used for recreational purposes such as boating and swimming.

Field Value
Abstract This data set contains parameters measured monthly by facility staff from March, 2013 to December, 2017. Data continues to be gathered and sets will be updated annually. This data set includes five lakes at FortWhyte Alive, a private facility in the south-west of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The FortWhyte lakes were excavated by the clay-pit mining operation of Canada Cement beginning in 1911. In order of excavation, the lakes include Muir (~1920), Lake 2 (~1950), Lake 3 (~1960), Devonian (~1970) and Cargill (~1980). Monitoring also includes the facility’s onsite wastewater treatment system (2001) during ice-free months. Parameters measured include total phosphorus, total ammonia as N, dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, conductivity, ice thickness and snow depth, chlorophyll a concentration, and Secchi depth.
